Does my story sound a bit familiar?
After almost ten years it was a business that “didn’t work” and honestly, I wanted out. Crazy thing, I always wanted to have my own business, but now, it was a reality and I was ready to chuck the whole thing. How did this happen? Why didn’t my business work? Now I know why.
I got sucked into the Entrepreneurial Myth (see book, The E-Myth). The belief (myth) is that because you understand how to do the technical work of a business, you think you know how to build a business that does that technical work. For me, that was live potted plants. I was that green-thumb guy, who even as a teenager just had a knack with plants. Live plants were my hobby – loved em! (Sounding familiar yet…what was your technical skill turned business?)
Then at 22, with a healthy dose of cockiness and naiveté, I started a company called, Interior Plant Scapes. No joke, I really thought, “how hard could it be? Answer? — “Hard. Really hard.”
Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with hard work, but it was the confusion, frustration and daily game of “whack-a-mole” that was wearing me down. Live plants I knew, how to build a business around live plants…clueless!

After 7+ years in the business, I was enjoying success, but I was not enjoying the business. Without the core beliefs I know now, I’d fallen into the pit of most small business owners — I had a business but not a life. In case you think I’m exaggerating, read the first sentence from the introduction of my book.

Then one day during the coffee break at a business conference, I heard from a fellow attendee the sentence that would change everything… “You need to stop working IN your business as an employee and start working ON it.” You may recognize that quote from Michael Gerber, but have you ever stopped to consider how to actually work “on” your business. Like me, working in your business is the only thing you’ve ever known, or even considered! Friend, there’s a better way, and I found it. You can be a business owner, and you can have a life-style business.
The one-eighty turn-around started with a new vision of what my life and business could look like. Armed with a bigger vision, I went to work creating a systems-driven business. Now, 35 years in, and 25 of those working on it, “everything’s a system and systems are everything.”
Still in the position of President of Interior Plant Scapes, but free of the day-to-day work, my favorite thing now is teaching fellow business owners how to be the intelligent designers of not only their businesses — but even more, their lives.
